Mixes up line, ray, and segment

What you might hear
A line and a line segment are the same thing, right? They both look like a straight line to me.

The child treats a line, a ray, and a line segment as the same thing. They do not notice the stopping points. A line goes on forever both ways. A ray goes on forever one way. A segment stops at both ends. The child draws all three the same way and labels them wrong.

The child thinks an angle is bigger when its two arms are drawn longer. They look at the length of the rays, not the size of the opening. So they say a wide angle with short arms is smaller than a narrow angle with long arms. The opening is what really sets the angle size.

Longer lines look like 'more,' so the child counts length as size. The opening between the arms is harder to notice than the arms themselves.

Thinks a point has a size

What you might hear
I made my point bigger so it would be easier to see on the page.

The child draws a point as a big dot or a small circle. They think a bigger dot means a bigger point. But a point only marks one exact spot. It has no size at all. The child may even draw two dots far apart and call it one point.

Any mark on paper has to take up some space, so the child sees the dot as a thing with a size. The idea that a point marks just one spot and has no size is hard to picture.
