Multiplies the sides instead of adding faces

What you might hear

I did length times width times height, so the surface area is that number.

Instead of finding each face's area and adding, the child multiplies length by width by height. They report the volume number and call it the surface area.

Both topics use the same three numbers on a box. The child grabs the multiply rule that feels familiar. They mix up filling the box with covering the box.

This one responds to correction in the moment — the idea is there, the rule being applied is not.

There are three different faces, so I added those three areas.

The child knows a box has pairs of equal faces. But they find the area of the top, the front, and one side, then stop. They forget that each one has a twin on the other side, so they leave out three faces.
