Generate measurement data and make line plots: why children get it wrong

There are 3 recognisable ways a child goes wrong here — distinct patterns, not carelessness.

Each one below is a mistake our question bank was built to expose, written out the way you would actually hear it said out loud at home.

Knowing which one you are looking at is the whole job. "Check your answer" does not help a child who is confidently applying the wrong rule.

What you might hear

'I have 5 pencils so I made 5 X's.'

Child measures several pencils, then puts one X above each number to show 'how many pencils' rather than placing an X over the length of each pencil.

Child confuses a line plot with a tally or bar graph from earlier units, where each mark stood for one object counted, not for a measured length.

This one responds to correction in the moment — the idea is there, the rule being applied is not.

What you might hear

'The crayon is 8 and the marker is 5, so I put X's over 8 and 5.'

Child measures some objects in inches and others in centimeters (or with different rulers) and plots all the numbers on the same line plot.

Child treats the numbers as just numbers and does not see that a length only has meaning paired with its unit, so mixing units feels harmless.

This one is not a slip to correct — the underlying idea needs re-teaching before more practice will help.

Spacing the line plot scale unevenly to fit the data

What you might hear

'Nothing was 5 or 6 long, so I didn't write them.'

Child labels the number line only with the lengths that appeared (e.g. 3, 4, 7) and leaves out 5 and 6, putting the marks side by side.

Child thinks the line only needs the values they measured, not a steady count, so they skip numbers that had no objects.
