Write time in hours and half-hours: why children get it wrong

There are 3 recognisable ways a child goes wrong here — distinct patterns, not carelessness.

Each one below is a mistake our question bank was built to expose, written out the way you would actually hear it said out loud at home.

Knowing which one you are looking at is the whole job. "Check your answer" does not help a child who is confidently applying the wrong rule.

What you might hear

The long hand is on the 6, so it's three-oh-six.

At a half-hour the long hand points to the 6, so the child writes the time as 3:06 (or 3:6) instead of 3:30 — copying the number the long hand touches straight into the minutes spot.

The child believes each number on the clock face means that many minutes — the same way it means that many on a counting line. They haven't yet learned that the numbers are spaced 5 minutes apart, so the 6 stands for 30 minutes, not 6.

This one responds to correction in the moment — the idea is there, the rule being applied is not.

Thinks 'half past' means writing :50

What you might hear

Half is five, so half past three is three-fifty.

For a half-hour the child writes 3:50 (or 3:5) instead of 3:30, because 'half' makes them think of the number 5 rather than 30 minutes.

The child links the word 'half' to the digit 5 (as in 'a half is one-half, like 5') instead of understanding that half of an hour is 30 of its 60 minutes. The mental model is word-to-digit, not a real sense of half of sixty.

Picks the next hour when the short hand is between two numbers

What you might hear

The little hand is almost on the 4, so it's four-thirty.

At 3:30 the short hand sits between the 3 and the 4, so the child writes 4:30 — choosing the number the hand is moving toward instead of the hour it has not finished yet.

The child reads the hour hand like a pointer that should land exactly on a number, so when it's between two they pick the one it looks closest to or is heading for. They don't yet know that until the hand reaches the next number, it is still the earlier hour.
